As an undergraduate stepping into the world of research for the first time, learning how to access the myriad of academic sources can be a challenge. Our library conducts workshops to introduce students to useful resources and tools to help them navigate the information landscape .
The workshops were attended by students from the Undergraduate, Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Diploma programmes as part of the orientation organised by the Office of Teacher Education (OTE). Held on 19 July and 3 August 2017, a total of 195 students from the August intake attended the hour-long workshops.
Among some of the skills taught at the workshops were how to cite references in their discipline-preferred format (APA citation style for the social sciences). Students were also given hands-on practice on how to use the library search engine (LibDiscover!) and catalogue (WebOPAC) to search for both electronic and print versions of books and journal articles. Other essential and oft-used resources by students such as the Reserves (Red Spot) collection, and examination papers were also highlighted.
Our library hopes that these informative sessions have helped our students to set off on the right foot as they begin the school year.
